Part One

I have been working on a new CNC sign project for my neighbor Ashlee. Ashlee wants a sign with a picture of one of her registered Holstein cows on it. This has been a fun project so I thought I would try something new. I will blog about the project every day till it’s finished. And you can share in the progress and setbacks.

I have been doing a lot of experimentation on different techniques to make the cow look good both up close and at a distance. I have been using MDF for the test material because it is cheap and easy to come by.   Anyway what I would do is try a technique in my CNC Sign Projects and if it didn’t work I would just cut the next technique over the previous one. Usually I could get two or three tries before I had to change the wood.

WHAT KIND OF STAIN TO USE

I have also been experimenting with different  color stains and paint to get the look I wanted. Here are some picture of the  attempts. When I get a technique I am happy with, I will make the sign in the expensive OAK board. Oak is not the best woods to make this sort of project with because it has a very  strong grain and chips easily. However, since my neighbor is supplying the board I won’t complain.

WHAT ROUTER BITS TO USE

There is no way that this project is economical to make but I am gaining a lot of knowledge. One thing I found is that the Best Bit for doing this kind of work is the Laser Point Bit from CMT.  Here is a link to the Bit I used. I got it on Amazon (Disclosure). I got this bit after I saw it recommended on one of the CNC Forums I subscribe to. It is one of the best purchases I have made for CNC. The tip on the bit is very sharp and pointed. Most V Groove bits do not actually have a pointed tip but the CMT Laser Point bit does and it leaves a very clear line down the center of any V Carve project.
